Under the Sweet Stars(4) Expanding our Vision of God in Community

Lightning bug, 2020

On the fourth Sunday of each month we have an intergenerational gathering. We either meet ALL IN, meaning all ages together inside our church building, or we meet ALL OUT, everyone together in some form OUTSIDE of the church building.

On the fourth Sunday of January, after a bit of worship and a round of family feud, we went downstairs and took our seats at circular tables. Each table had a cloth bag containing a mystery object. The goal of each table was to collaborate and write a MADLIB Liturgy for God, using the object as inspiration. It was fun watching little kids, high schoolers, and adults exploring their ideas of God together.

After the creative process was complete, each table read their offering. Here are some of the homemade, intergenerational liturgies spoken that day:

God is like a pearl, an unfound treasure.

God is like a welcoming host, laying out a lavish feast.

God is like a good idea, sparkling like a lightning bug.

God is like a blanket, comforting in the night.

God is like a drum, keeping rhythm to the song of life.

God is like a gardener, enlivening in the dry spell.

Afterwards, we had communion, and then feasted on an abundant feast of cheese, meats, devilled eggs, baked goods, and goldfish that Charly prepared for us, just to bless us.

All of it felt generous. All of it felt like an embodiment of God’s lavish heart in the shape and form of community.

Thank you for being a community willing to try new things. Thank you, kids, for showing up; and thank you, adults, for relationally investing in our kids.

I see you! I appreciate you!

Deep peace and blessing,

— Anne

New to Southpoint?

At Southpoint, it all begins with God’s love. Just as a plant grows, it receives sunshine, so we grow as we receive God’s love. At Southpoint, we are growing in our capacity to love God, ourselves, one another, and creation.

We seek to be a community of grace that is intentional yet organic, spacious yet authentic, grace-filled yet accountable. * We are fully welcoming. *

We encourage relationships rather than run programs, yet we recognize the importance of intentionality and structure as we nurture life together.

As a community, we seek to put our love in action. We value helping out on Sunday mornings, sharing food, and showing up in hard times. We keep our church life simple so folk have time to build relationships with family, friends, and neighbours. We encourage folk to serve in tangible ways within the wider community. We rent space rather than own a building, allowing us to do more with less, supporting missions at home and abroad.
