Whats in a name?

Oct 08, 2008

They say that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”.  We’ve all heard this Romeo & Juliet phrase used before to convey the point that the name of something is ultimately not as important as what that something actually is.

Funny enough though, even as Juliet was forsaking her name and asking metaphysical questions about perennially flowering shrubs, ole Bill Shakespeare was reported to have been “making a little joke at the expense of the Rose theatre.  The Rose was a local rival to his Globe Theatre and is reputed to have had less than effective sanitary arrangements. The story goes that this was a coy joke about the smell.”

It turns out that the name was really important after all.  Speaking of names, our coffee house needs a name.  Over the last 8 months, Scott and I have been vetoing each others suggestions via email and clearly the name choosing process needs to be opened up to the masses.  So here’s what we’re gonna do:

I have an email address: pete.johnson@shaw.ca

You might have an idea for a name.  It just so happens that we are in desperate need for your ideas for a name, so even if you don’t have one, try to come up with something.  🙂

Send me 2 things; your suggestion for a name, and the significance of the name itself.  You can send as many as you like, no limit.  There are some restrictions though.  Lets try to stay away from names containing bean, grounds, mocha, java, etc.  Other than that, go nuts!

I’ll compile the names I receive and some super special people and I will weed through them all and shortlist the best ones, then you’ll here from me again.  If you don’t want to email, you can drop it off at church with Scott or myself.

Thanks for listening, and let the naming begin!

We would like the coffee house to be called Super Coffee or (this name came after a few minutes of deep thought) Super Poo Coffee. Our mom didn’t agree but had to laugh at the names that we came up with

Brothers Brew

It came to me as I was reflecting about the coffee shop, which made me think of fellowship. Thus Brothers Brews, as part of our Christian family.

The Well

– it is the center
– and filling

Keep the names coming gang! We’ve only had a handful of entries and the more, the better!

Third Place Cafe, The Hub, The Shot Spot, Mender’s Corner (thinking of nets), tabla (spanish for table), just letting this pour out of my brain… 🙂
