Why Onions?

“Why do we plant onions on a Sunday morning? What does that have to do with being a church?”
Well, this is one of my favourite Sundays, so let me share with you my “Why”.
First, planting onions is an embodiment of our three core practices. Did you know that our church has three core practices to better position us within the flow of God’s Love? They are Worship, Connection, and Care.
Worship is a way of life, not just something we do in a church building on Sunday mornings. At Southpoint, we seek to worship together in ways that are holistic, accessible, participatory, and embodied. We make room for creativity, include children, and integrate our values into our worship, including our commitment to cultivating kinship with Creation.
We also seek to foster connections that feel friendly, organic, open, and real, such as potlucks, fifth Sunday brunches, and intergenerational hikes. Planting onions for A Rocha every April allows us to connect with one another, with A Rocha, and with the earth. We are also connecting into a wider global celebration, Good Seed Sunday, in honour of Earth Day.
As a community, we care. We pray, share meals, and show up for each other in hard times. We want to grow in our ability to be responsive to the needs of our wider community as well. A Rocha is our neighbour. We care for the people of A Rocha by coming alongside and helping. We care for our community by supporting local farming. And we care for creation by supporting A Rocha, an organization that shares our value of caring for creation.
hope next year you can join us!
Deep peace,
Anne

New to Southpoint?
At Southpoint, it all begins with God’s love. Just as a plant grows, it receives sunshine, so we grow as we receive God’s love. At Southpoint, we are growing in our capacity to love God, ourselves, one another, and Creation.
We seek to be a community of grace that is intentional yet organic, spacious yet authentic, grace-filled yet accountable. * We are fully welcoming. *
We encourage relationships rather than run programs, yet we recognize the importance of intentionality and structure as we nurture life together.
As a community, we seek to put our love in action. We value helping out on Sunday mornings, sharing food, and showing up in hard times. We keep our church life simple so folk have time to build relationships with family, friends, and neighbours. We encourage folk to serve in tangible ways within the wider community. We rent space rather than own a building, allowing us to do more with less, supporting missions at home and abroad.
