Initiatives of Change 2015

Southpoint Summer 2020

As the weather warms and the number of Covid cases drops in BC, we are beginning to come out of deep hibernation and reconnect in safe ways. This gives us a window of opportunity to have some face-to-face contact in smaller clusters. In response to the preferences named in our recent survey, we’ve come up with a rotation for summer that will look like this:

July 5:   Zoom: David M. speaking
July 12:  Outdoors
July 19:  Zoom: Brian O. speaking
July 26:  Outdoors
Aug 2:  Zoom: Janet speaking
Aug 9:  Outdoors
Aug 16: Zoom Sunday
Aug 23: Outdoors
Aug 30: Zoom Sunday

On Zoom Sundays, we will continue the current rhythm, with a new liturgy for summer. Our theme is “voices of hope”, and someone from within our community will share briefly on the subject of hope.

On Outdoor Sundays, we will meet outside in three separate locations, with two gathering groups per place. Although we are not yet able to sing together, we will share liturgy, communion, and cultivate a conversation around hope, highlighting one new question each week. To keep us physically-distanced and safe, we will follow these protocols:

– Communion: each household with separate bread/cup

– BYO chairs, placed in household groupings, 6 feet from other households

– For those who do not feel ready or able to meet folk face-to-face, we will also have a group discussion happening via zoom.

– In case of rain, we would all join the ZOOM group

– We are exploring how to engage children in this space, realizing zoom has not been an easy style of worship for them

IN ADDITION, on summer Wednesdays, from 3:00-4:30 pm, you are invited to come and be together in the Kingfisher Farm orchard. Angela will host a small group activity for creative, intergenerational interactions. All activities will be done with physical distancing in mind.

You will be asked to bring your own art supplies/musical instruments/books each week, but we’ll be able to be in the orchard together, or in the forest for the “scavenger hunt” days.

July 8 – Painting
July 15 – Music making
July 22 – Nature scavenger hunt
July 29 – Clay sculpture
Aug 5 – Storytime
Aug 12 – Music
Aug 19 – Painting
Aug 26 – Nature scavenger hunt

Warmly,
Anne and Angela

Resources for Antiracism: Initiatives of Change

With the cry for racial justice happening around the world, from what resources within our own community can we learn? For years, Chris and Anne Hartnell worked for Initiatives of Change, an NGO that, among many things, builds bridges through interfaith and intercultural dialogues.

In Canada, Initiatives of Change focuses efforts on the following activities:

Follow-up to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission:

To engage First Nations, French- and English Canadians and recent immigrants in healing the divides of the past for a better future together.

Bridge Building:

Intercultural and interfaith dialogue to build community and to establish trust across divides.

Equipping Changemakers:

Enable young people to discover leadership skills in their own vocation.

I was struck by how the IOFC’s approach mirrors the advice of Black Lives Matter. It begins with listening:  “Change begins in silence” and moves to action: “What is your initiative of change?”  To learn more of this organization and their approach, see: link.
