Week of Nov 29 – Dec 5

Hope

This week we have stepped into the season Advent together. Last night, the moon cast shadows on the lawn. Today, the sun is shining against green cedar trees. Even in the midst of this season of darkness, light awaits us.

Here are two readings to lighten your path through this first week of Advent. This week, we are reminded it is possible to wait with hope. We are learning to sit in the “not knowing” with a posture of trust.

I’m Learning to Sit with Not Knowing

I’m learning to sit with not knowing.
When I don’t see where its going,
Cool my heels and start slowing.
I am learning to sit with not knowing.

I’m learning to sit with what’s next,
What if and my best guess,
Be kinder when it’s a process.
I’m learning to live with what’s next.

Here’s a clear space that I’ve chosen
Where the denseness of this world opens,
Where there’s something holding steady and true,
Regardless of me or you.

I’m learning to live with the high stakes.
Befriending my mistakes,
Lay my hand where my heart aches.
I’m learning to live with the high stakes.

Here’s a clear space that I’ve chosen
Where the denseness of this world opens,
Where there’s something holding steady and true
Regardless of me or you.

I’m learning to live with what takes time,
No ribbon across some finish line.
Stop feeling I’m always a day behind.
I’m learning to live with what takes time.

I’m learning to sit with not knowing.
When I don’t see where its going,
Cool my heels and start slowing.
I am learning to sit with not knowing.

– Words and Music by Carrie Newcomer

To wait with openness and trust is an enormously radical attitude toward life. It is choosing to hope that something is happening for us that is far beyond our own imaginings. It is giving up control over our future and letting God define our life. It is living with the conviction that God molds us in love, holds us in tenderness, and moves us away from the sources of our fear.

Parents’ Advent Tip

This week, why not:

Go on a little shopping trip together to pick out a pair of cozy socks for our advent fundraiser for vulnerable youth.

Have a treasure hunt, scrounging through drawers, pockets and purses to see how much money you can find. Begin filling your sock up!

Advent Fundraising

Our tradition at Southpoint is to pool our resources during Advent. This year we are especially mindful of youth in Surrey and will raise funds to support Youth Unlimited. There are few different ways you’ll be invited to be involved with this as the weeks go.

Your Advent Week 1 postcard has one way. Jared Faw and Simon Neufeld will be participating in the Youth Unlimited Nite Outside. The boys will spend a night outside to raise awareness about vulnerable youth and to experience what it would be like to be on the streets on these cold winter nights. They will be linked (unfortunately, virtually) with other youth throughout the lower mainland doing this as well. More information to come.
